Chief Chapoto of Kanyemba area in Mbire district has died.

He was 71.

Chief Chapoto, born Peter Enock, succumbed to prostate cancer at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Monday.

He was appointed substantive chief in 2005. Mashonaland Central Provincial administrator Mr Cosmos Chiringa confirmed the death, but said they were waiting for the family to finalise burial arrangements.

“This is sad news to the province, especially to the Kanyemba community,” he said.

“Chief Chapoto was instrumental in the Kanyemba development project.

“He was highly respected, not only in Mbire, but also in Zambia, he was of the Machikunda tribe. This is a huge loss to the province, especially now that the development projects are starting to take shape.

“Chief Chapoto was very supportive of development activities in Kanyemba and was dedicated to improving the livelihood of people in Kanyemba. When Vice President Cde Constantino Chiwenga, ministers and Government officials visited the area, Chief Chapoto was very accommodating and cooperative. The development in Kanyemba could not have taken place if the Chief was not cooperative. He was a level headed man who was not afraid to speak his mind.”
