At least 70 broken down boreholes in Hurungwe District are set to be rehabilitated in the next two weeks, as Government moves to ease water woes in the area.

In an interview recently, District Development Fund director of water supplies Mr Edwin Toriro said Government was concerned over the water crisis in the district.

“Indeed, Hurungwe District is one of the difficult areas in terms of water supplies, but as Government we are putting in place response mechanisms which will first of all address the broken down boreholes in the area,” he said.

“We have already activated our district maintenance team and we are going to provide spares to ensure that those which can be repaired urgently can be attended to.”

Mr Toriro said most of the boreholes in the district had no water as a result of the falling water table, adding that this could, however, improve following the recent rains.

“So in terms of mechanical status, we are definitely going to activate a lot of them,” he said.

“Actually in Hurungwe, we are targeting around 70 of the so-called broken-down boreholes.”

Mr Toriro said the DDF had also extended its focus to marginalised areas, with no access to water supplies, saying members of the geophysics department would be on the ground in the next two months to identify potential drilling sites in the area.

This, he said, would avert the occurrence of water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid in the area.

“The next level in our intervention is actually looking at those disadvantaged areas which do not have water supplies at all,” said Mr Toriro.

“We have a component of some failure rates in terms of our geo size service and we are going to do the re-siting and making sure that we will definitely attend to those flush points where we registered failure.”
