At least 49 workers died on duty while more than 3 600 others were injured at work between January and August this year, the National Social Security Authority has said.The authority’s spokesperson Mr Philemon Shereni said the transport and mining sectors were contributing the highest injury statistics.

“Occupational injuries up to end of August 2013 are 3 641 while those up to the end of August 2012 were 3 258.  Occupational deaths up to end of August 2013 are 49 while for the same period in 2012 were 63,” Mr Shereni said.

He said the increase in the number of accidents occurring at the workplace shows that employers were not complying with the stipulated safety standards and regulations.

Mr Shereni said NSSA’s factory inspectors have since launched a blitz in all cities as a mitigation factor to ensure the highest quality safety of workers in the workplace.

“The National Occupational Safety and Health policy is being reviewed to make it more detailed and explicit on the management of occupational safety and health.”
