Zimbabwean hip-hop remains a force to reckon with as some young people continue to favour the genre. The just ended weekend was packed to the brim with hip-hop events including the Zangoma Hip-hop Party last Friday and the monthly Changamire Hip-hop Festival. A cosmopolitan crowd attended the much hyped Zangoma party bringing hip-hop fans and enthusiasts from across the nation together. The Zaangoma party kicked off at 7pm with DJ Chucknosis on the decks kicking songs which related with old school chaps who frequent the Travel Plaza rooftop bar. The stage was lit up by two large LED screens which made history as it was the very first time for any hip hop party to host such an expensive stage.

Hip-hop acts who came through them were the famous Team Rehab and G records, Junior Brown, Yagi Dojo and Blaze.

There was a bit of drama when an unknown group called TBF tried forcing their way in without paying. After being taken out of the show, one drunk TBF member reported to the police that he had been assaulted but ended up under arrest himself after investigations by the police.

All this drama did not stop club DJs Zyon Black and Oskarr, who is based in Cyprus, from rocking the crowd with electronic new age dance music. Hip-hop enthusiasts insisted on DJ Krimz Beatz (who was the official Zim hip-hop DJ) on getting on stage and when he did the crowd went crazy dancing ecstatically to local hip-hop music from Tehn Diamond, Myke Pimp, Junior Brown, Stunner and Kidd Active to mention a few. In an interview with Co-organiser Michael “Mcpotar” Mupotaringa told this reporter that he was fairly happy about the party but had expected more people to come.

“The turnout is not what I anticipated and I feel we still have much to do to get big numbers. Nevertheless I really want to thank my team for making so many sacrifices especially Tadiwa and Quence,” he said.

Award winning stand-up comedian Simba the Comic King who was the host and was delighted to have been part of the initiative.

“I am happy to have been part of this event and I got to learn a lot and realised that comedy and hip hop are much alike both are markets which are still trying to grow in Zimbabwe. Zangoma with consistency is a brand that will certainly take off,” he said.
