LONDON. – Louis van Gaal has been backed to restore Manchester United to their former glory by the man who appointed him.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who oversaw Van Gaal’s appointment, hailed the Dutchman as the perfect fit for the club as they plot their route back to the top.
Woodward believes Van Gaal has the conviction and strength of character to take the big decisions required of a United boss and bring back the club’s famed attacking style after last season’s debacle under David Moyes.

United finished seventh last season, their worst position since the Premier League was formed, losing seven games at Old Trafford and 13 overall in a season which saw Moyes sacked after 10 calamitous months in charge.

Van Gaal takes charge of his first game as United boss tomorrow, when his side take on LA Galaxy in Los Angeles in the first encounter on their pre-season tour of the US.

And in the 62-year-old former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, who took Holland to third place in the World Cup in Brazil, Woodward claimed United have the best possible man at the helm.

“He’s got incredible energy and very importantly he likes attacking football,” said Woodward.
“If you remember the Barcelona team (he managed) in the late ‘90s, who played incredible, attacking football, and those games we had against them in ‘98 /99, that’s the kind of football Manchester United fans love. It’s part of our DNA.

“The second part of what he likes is giving youth a chance.
“He has got a track record littered with giving young players a break in the first team, who have gone on to be stars.

“Clearly that’s Manchester United’s philosophy and we want him to continue with that.” – The Mirror.
