LONDON. -Heather Watson’s Wimbledon campaign came to an end in the third round against Serena Williams following a pulsating contest with the best player on the planet.

The pair traded sets before Williams recovered from going 3-0 down in the decider to close out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

The Brit has never progressed beyond the third round of a Grand Slam with the Guernsey-born star going down 6-2 in the first set as Williams showcased her power on Centre Court.

Roared on by a vocal home crowd at the hallowed SW19 venue, Watson went toe-to-toe with Williams in the second set with the pair tied on 4-4 at one stage.

Despite the gulf in experience and rankings points, Watson refused to go quietly into the London night and broke Williams to lead 5-4 before serving out the set to drag the contest into a third set decider,

Watson was playing the game of her live following up with two breaks of serve to lead 3-0 but Williams showed her class to level matters at three games apiece.

Watson was matching Williams’ power shot for shot, but it was not quite good enough. – Mailonline.
