A 24-year-old woman from Bulawayo is believed to have drowned in the Limpopo River along with a Beitbridge man who was assisting her to illegally cross into South Africa last Friday night.
Her husband managed to pull their three-year-old son to safety.
Police are looking for Clementia Nkomo of Bulawayo and Takani Ndlovu of Beitbridge who they believe have drowned.
The incident occurred at around 6pm near a popular illegal crossing point known as Kwa Mai Maria.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesman Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said, “Preliminary investi-gations reveal that on the day in question, the now deceased woman was in the company of her husband, Mlungisi Sithole and their three-year-old son.
“They approached Takani Ndlovu to assist them to illegally cross the border into South Africa for a fee.
“When they agreed on the terms they proceeded to an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River popularly known as Kwa Mai Maria.
“However, while crossing the flooded river, Nkomo and Ndlovu were swept away by the strong tide and drowned.”
Insp Dzirutwe said Nkomo’s husband rescued their son and swam back to the Zimbabwean side of the border where he made a police report.
