A headmistress from Matinunura Secondary School in Mkoba 9, Gweru, has been arrested for allegedly prejudicing the school of $18 165 meant for the project of selling school uniforms.

Ielin Chipo Kwangware (53) of 12 Lundi Park appeared before Gweru magistrate Ms Judith Taruvinga last week facing one count of theft.

Kwangware, who was represented by her lawyer Mr Arnold Siakwinje, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Ms Taruvinga remanded her out of custody to today for trial.

Prosecutor Mr Ernest Mzembe told the court that October 29 last year, a meeting was held at Matinunura Secondary School, which elected a new School Development Committee.

The new, SDC, Mr Mzembe said, audited the financial records.

“The SDC noted that there were anomalies in the finances raised from the school project of selling school uniforms, a project which Kwangware was in charge of,” said Mr Mzembe.

He said an investigation was carried out and it was discovered that from the period extending from January to December 2014, the school purchased school uniforms valued at $61 013 and made total sales of $49 709, leaving a stock of $15 630.

“The court also heard that in January 2015, the remaining stock did not reflect on the financial statement on how it was disposed of,” said Mr Mzembe. “The financial statement only showed that there was no stock at all, which was contrary to the closing balance of stock in 2014.

“The same year, a further $2 525 was withdrawn to purchase another stock of uniforms, but the uniforms were not in stock and were not accounted for. The value unaccounted for is $18 165 and nothing was recovered.”
