Youths should actively participate in recreational activities, as part of economic development and nation building, Water Resources Development and Climate Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has said. Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said youths’ participation in recreational activities would also assist in nurturing talents in various sporting disciplines.

Speaking at inter-constituency youths games held recently at St Mathias Tsonzo High School where teams drawn from Mutasa Central, Mutasa North and Mutasa South constituencies participated, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said youths should behave appropriately.

“We are not only looking at where we are today, but we are also looking at our youths and reflecting on where we came from,” she said. We also started as youths when we went to join the liberation war, to fight for our country. As youths, look back and copy from us. We call that wisdom. The youths are not looking at us and what we achieved, but also at where we came from. They are copying and emulating what we did and what we have today.

“Today we have an economic revolution. If you look at the Zim-Asset programme, there is what is called a social sector, which incorporates sport. That is why President Mugabe set up the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Arts and Culture. Today we want to reflect on where we came from and where we are going through sport.” Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said while it was good for youths to enjoy sports, it was crucial to remember that as future leaders, they needed to make sure that there was food security.

“Youths should participate in projects that ensure food security, but you must remember to have recreational activities in the form of sport and culture I am sure that there are some with musical bands here; we also want to have exceptional cases in sports. We want to have players who come from Mutasa playing for big teams like Dynamos. We are going to have programmes that nurture talent in Mutasa,” she said.

Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri urged youths to venture into projects in their respective communities, saying she wanted to start programmes that utilised waste materials. She encouraged people who attended the event to invest their efforts in agro-forest and fisheries projects. Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said by venturing into the said projects, youths would be kept busy, which reduces their chances of committing crime.
