TelOne consulted its employees before it decided not to award them their bonuses this year, managing director Mrs Chipo Mtasa has said. The parastatal said its workers agreed to the non-payment of bonuses contrary to claims by the Communication and Allied Services Workers Union of Zimbabwe that the workers would take legal action against management.

In a statement, Mrs Mtasa said there was no dispute concerning the non-payment of bonuses.
“Before a decision to suspend the payment of 2014 bonus was made, the company engaged widely with staff and their representative unions.
“Official communication was therefore sent to all members of staff on the 6th of November 2014 explaining the position of the company and the option to commute their vacation leave days in lieu of bonus if they so desired,” she said.

Mrs Mtasa said 2 061 out of the 2 136 workers consented to the conversion of their vacation leave days in place of bonus saying this was a ‘clear indication of understanding and commitment demonstrated by the employees.’

TelOne National Workers Committee chairperson Mr Thomas Shoniwa confirmed the development.
“To set the record straight, due consultation was undertaken between TelOne management and all the relevant stakeholders including employees at an individual level,” he said in a statement.

“TelOne employees are working closely with management in ensuring that the staff costs to income ratio are reduced to the 30 percent threshold as stipulated by the shareholder.”

Last week, Communication and Allied Services Workers Union of Zimbabwe president Mr Lovemore Matombo threatened to take legal action against TelOne in a letter to Mrs Mtasa.

“We are protesting against this attitude and inhuman treatment of TelOne workers.
“Unless you reverse your decision, CASWUZ will instruct its lawyers to deal with this case.”
