HANISH Nagrani finally got it right when he won the Midlands Amateur Championship at Roland Park Golf Club in Zvishavane on Sunday for his major win on the local amateur golf circuit since his return from Canada early this year. The Bulawayo-based leading amateur golfer showed his vast experience with a well-polished performance in the asbestos mining town after carding solid rounds of 71, 72 in the opening two rounds before identical 69s in the last 36 holes for a seven-under-par 281.

Nagrani moved to Canada from Zimbabwe as a young boy where he attended Notre Dame College School before proceeding to Virginia Commonwealth University in the US.

He was, however, pushed all the way by Falcon College student and national junior golf team player, Justin Kersten, who was also in brilliant form after carding rounds of 72, 71, 73 and 66 for a total of six-under-par 282.

Kieran Vincent came third on one-under-par 287 following rounds of 75, 69, 72 and 71 whilst David Amm (74, 77, 71 and 70) finished fourth on four -over-par 292.

Gweru-based amateur golfer Godfrey Zulu (76, 73, 72 and 75) came fifth, a shot ahead of Doctor Maphosa (76, 73, 72 and 75).

The Midlands Amateur Championship, which attracted a field of 32 players, provided participants with an opportunity of earning points for the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) Order of Merit Standings.

This week local amateur golfers will turn their attention to the Harare Amateur Championship to be held at Police Golf Club from July 31 to August 2. – Tee Time Golf Magazine.
