The Makonde Better Schools Programme has rewarded pupils, who excelled in 2016 district examinations to enhance intellectual competition. The awards were given to Grade Seven, Form Four and Form Six candidates, who passed their mid-year exams and those who excelled in sporting activities last year. The district annual awards were run under the theme: “Consolidating and improving the gains of the updated curriculum”.

Addressing stakeholders who gathered at Sinoia Primary in Chinhoyi on Sunday, Acting District Schools Inspector Mr Solomon Katoma said the award- giving ceremony inculcated unity among schools and pupils.

“These awards are meant to inculcate the spirit of togetherness among schools and pupils, to foster healthy developmental competition among schools,” he said. Mr Katoma added that schools had the chance to showcase their pupils’ potential and abilities to excel in different aspects of life.

“The award giving ceremony is one which, allows schools in our districts to showcase the potential and abilities of children to transform their lives through education,” he added. He acknowledged those who excelled in sports saying it was the thrust of the ministry.

“The thrust of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is on quality education. I would like to recognise and acknowledge the sporting excellence of Makonde District schools that went beyond our borders. I would like to thank those pupils who made us proud at Provincial Annual Science, Sports and Arts Festival, National Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival and the National Youth Games,” said Mr Katoma. Schools engaged in developmental initiatives were also awarded prizes for improving the outlook of their schools. These are Ruvimbo Primary, Murereka Primary School, Chinhoyi High School, Ridziwi Secondary, Richmond Secondary School, Mhangura Secondary and Zurungowe Secondary School.
