Jail-breaker kills prison officer

A prisoner escaped from Hurungwe Prison farm on Saturday and the next day broke into a prison officer’s house and stabbed and killed the woman prison officer, who was alone at the time.
Stancelous Mashayamombe (30) was arrested the same day while selling beans he had stolen. He broke loose with only just over six months of his 30-month sentence for attempted murder still to run.

Mrs Besty Tapiwa-Mujuru, a Grade Two prison officer, was alone in the house at the time since her husband, Superintendent Mujuru of the same station, was attending a management training course at Ntabazinduna near Bulawayo.

Mashayamombe, after stabbing and killing Mrs Tapiwa-Mujuru, stole her husband’s clothes, dumping his prison garb in the house, and stole her Nissan car.
When the body was discovered, the discarded prison garb identified the likely killer.

Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service spokesperson Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Banda said Mashayamombe was re-arrested 5km from Maumbe Shops, while selling beans in Magunje and was being kept in Karoi.

“The only thing that helped us to arrest him was after the discovery of his garb he had left at the scene of the crime,” she said.
