FC Platinum face another huge test of character in their quest to seize control of the Castle Lager Premiership race when they clash against champions Chicken Inn at White City.

The miners are second on the log table ahead of this afternoon’s rescheduled match, but more importantly for them they have the same number of points — 30 — as leaders Highlanders who also have a game in hand.

However, FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza said he is not worried much about the position of his team on the log standings at the moment as he wants his charges to concentrate on winning their matches.

“We are not worried much about finishing on top, finishing on second, on third or whatever position after every game that we play. All we need is to play all our matches getting positive results and that will determine which position we will end up on at the end of the season,” said Mapeza.

FC Platinum are one of the favourites to lift the championship this season having started on a strong footing.

But they face a strong challenge from resurgent Bulawayo giants Highlanders and CAPS United. Dynamos and ZPC Kariba are also in the reckoning.

Mapeza said he would try to psyche his players for today’s crunch game.

“After the Sunday game we spoke about the break and everybody was switched off .We now have to psyche up the players. It’s a challenge, but on Saturday (today) everyone will be raring to go.

“I am not someone who always says I will go and collect maximum points, but I go to matches to try and get a positive result. I have told my players that the break is no longer there and we are ready to go. We are positive. We need to go there and collect something,” said Mapeza.

Mapeza’s men were buoyed by their 1-0 win over Bulawayo City in their last assignment while their opponents have failed to replicate the form that won them their maiden championship last season.

Big forward Tarisai Rukanda, who was substituted in the last match following a collision with a Bulawayo City defender is expected to be back for the match.

Mapeza also has Brian Muzondiwa who has returned from injury after six months on the sidelines, Walter Musona and Marshall Mudehwe to build his attack on.

Midfielders Winston Mhango and Rodwell Chinyengetere are also geared for a battle against the Gamecocks and will be up against the experience of Clement Matawu and Thabani Goredema who has vastly improved under the guidance of new coach Rahman Gumbo.

Chicken Inn have been blowing hot and cold and they will be looking for a win at home at least to finish the first half of the season inside the top half of the log standings.

The Gamecocks, who drew 1-1 with Harare City in their last match, are currently 10th with 19 points from 14 games.
