A solution specialist with E-Learning Solution yesterday appeared in court accused of defrauding FBC bank of about $79 000 during the time he was branch manager for the bank.

Lawrence Mwerenga (39) was employed by FBC bank as its Makoni, Chitungwiza, branch manager.

He appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing fraud charges.

The complainant is FBC represented by its security manager Mr Ndabezihle Moyo.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that between December 2012 and April 2013, Mwerenga used dormant accounts at FBC Makoni branch.

He allegedly manufactured fake pay slips and letters of confirmation in the name of CITI Med Hospital.

It is alleged that he compiled loan application forms and forwarded them to FBC head office for approval.

Subsequently, the loans were processed and granted.

The accounts for the alleged employees of CITI Med Hospital were credited with amounts varying from $1 000 to $3 000 without the knowledge of the account holders.

It is alleged that Mwerenga forged signatures of all the account holders and withdrew the money.

The said account holders defaulted servicing their loans prompting FBC to visit them in an effort to recover the money.

This led to the discovery of the scam, leading to the arrest of Mwerenga.

FBC lost $79 030, and only $18 344,96 was recovered.
