LONDON. — Arsenal have made a move to hijack Everton’s £17m move for Deportivo La Coruna striker Lucas Perez. The Gunners will, infact, complete the signing of Perez today, according to reports in Spain. Marca claim there is now a total agreement between the two clubs for a £17m deal to take place following talks on Wednesday night. And provided there are no late complications, the Spanish newspaper reports the deal will be tied up by the end of play today, with Perez signing a three or four-year contract.

While many fans will be unaware of the Deportivo striker, Lucas does at least boast an impressive record in Spain. He has scored 18 goals in La Liga since joining Deportivo permanently from Greek side PAOK, and has also represented Rayo Vallecano during his career.

Arsenal are also being linked with a move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones, although the rivalry between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger looks likely to end any chance of a deal this summer with the United manager determined not to sell directly to his old rival.

Wenger has been keen to add a new striker to his squad this summer to provide Olivier Giroud with more competition.

And he turned his attentions to Perez after Leicester star Jamie Vardy snubbed a move to the Emirates Stadium while Lyon insisted Alexandre Lacazette would not be sold for less than £60m.

Perez has been in high demand with Everton also submitting an offer for the 27-year-old while several Spanish clubs are also reported to have shown interest.

But Arsenal appear to have won the race for his signature although Marca say personal terms are still to be agreed.

Everton had agreed a deal and even personal terms but Arsenal came in on Wednesday night for the 27-year-old.

Perez scored 17 goals last season and earned rave reviews despite Deportivo La Coruna struggling against relegation. Mirror Sport understands Perez is now in advanced negotiations with Arsenal and they are very hopeful of completing the deal.

Arsenal have been looking for a striker and a defender but appeared to have shelved plans for a forward.

But they are now in the mix and even though there is work to be done, Perez has put Everton on hold amid Arsenal’s late move.

As well as netting 17 times last season, Perez has already scored once this season. — The Mirror.
