SEASONED karate coach Winston Nyanhete will travel with only two athletes — Tanyaradzwa Ziwira and Tapiwa Nyikadzino — for the forthcoming 2024 Africa Games to be held in Accra, Ghana next month.

The Zimbabwe National Karate Federation (ZNKF) was given the green light to participate in the quadrennial continental games that will run from March 8-30 in the West African nation. ZNKF have, however, trimmed the team from 16 to three as local sports authorities have hinted they are going for quality rather than numbers.

“After the initial communication received from the government through the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), we were cleared to send a 16-member contingent of athletes and officials for the 2024 Africa Games,” said ZNKF in a statement.

“We assembled a team comprising Ashley Khuddu, Ruvimbo Madhewu, Kudzanayi Ndiripo, Tapiwa Kotsi, Tanyaradzwa Ziwira, Conor Mackintosh, Nelson Mlambo, Knowledge Chikondowa, Fortune Nyabanga, Adolf Chipwanyira, Tapiwa Nyikadzino as athletes.

“The technical team had Fradson Shavi the men’s coach, Victor Bunu women’s coach, and Monica Peters as the team manager.

“Due to unforeseen and unavoidable developments affecting not only Karate but, all other sports codes as well, the Government has now advised that we will now only be allowed to send three members on this tour.

“Given the goings on, the Zimbabwe National Karate Federation shall be represented at the 2024 African Games by athletes Tanyaradzwa Ziwira and Tapiwa Nyikadzino while Nyanhete will be the coach.”
