The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) has availed $36 000 to Kwekwe City Council towards the construction of the new-look Kwekwe Long Distance Bus Terminus. The construction of Kwekwe Long Distance Bus Terminus is set to be the model for all modern bus terminus to be constructed in all the cities country wide.

Construction of the Kwekwe Long Distance bus terminus has been on hold since September last year with the local authority citing lack of funding as the reason.

Responding to questions from councillors during a full council meeting on Monday, Kwekwe City Director of Works, Engineer John Mhike said the local authority has since received $36 000 towards the construction of the new terminus.

“We have received $36 000 this past week towards the completion of the last phase of our long distance bus terminus.

“We are on the last phase of the project but it had been on hold due to lack of funds. We will be resuming work soon after receiving money from ZINARA towards the completion of the terminus,” he said.

Eng Mhike, however, said Kwekwe City Council was yet to receive funds from the roads administration authority despite having been allocated $1,2 million by the same towards refurbishment of the roads.

“We were allocated $1,2 million as Kwekwe City Council towards roads rehabilitation but we are yet to receive a cent. This is the reason why our roads are very bad. We are yet to get anything,” he said.

Eng Mhike said the local authority, using its own funds, had contracted another company, N-Frays Construction towards the rehabilitation of the city roads but have since terminated the contract after the contractor failed to do a good job.

“We have since notified the contractor of cancellation of the contract and we intend to engage another contractor in the future projects.

Meanwhile, Eng Mhike said there were local companies that have since pledged to assist the cash-strapped local authority in its roads rehabilitation programme.

“We have Fiasco who have pledged to help with the Mbizo Road, where they will repair a kilometre stretch along the road. We also have another company that has shown interest in assisting with Bersima Street, Faraday, Corba Streets. We are really grateful to such companies for showing concern,” he said.
