ZIMBABWE amateur golf team captain Visitor Mapwanya is hopeful that the team will do well at the Zone VI games.

The team left the country for Uganda who are hosting this year’s event and seven players left the country on Monday.

Mapwanya from Renco Mine will lead the Zimbabwe team that has Stuart Krog who won the best amateur award at the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open on Sunday.

The team which was seen off by Zimbabwe Golf Association president Aiden Mhere will do battle with several countries and try to end South Africa’s dominance at the event.

Mapwanya said he is confident that the team will do well at the event considering their experience.

“I think we have a good team which has guys who have experience and I hope that will help us a lot,” said Mapwanya.

“The players have participated in several top tournaments so they can play anyone at any moment. Taking part in the Zimbabwe Open was a good thing for the players as they now have confidence in themselves.

“We would like to improve from our performance and end South Africa’s dominance at the event. “We are sure that we will do well and bring a good result from the tournament,” said Mapwanya.

The tournament was last year held at Devonvale Golf Estate in Cape Town, South Africa.

Hosts South Africa managed to retain the trophy for a record 19 times since 1995 in a competition where 12 countries participated in a matchplay format with players playing two singles matches, one better-ball and one foursomes.

Krogg has managed to retain his place in the team.

Among the countries which participated, Zimbabwe were the only ones to have given South Africa any real challenge of the two matches played between the neighbours.

Zimbabwe won one and lost the other on the final hole.

Mozambique received the wooden spoon after only drawing one match of the twenty four matches they played.
