ZIFA widens match-fixing investigations

Zifa, who are battling to cleanse their house in the wake of crippling allegations of match-fixing and betting scams, held their first assembly meeting on Saturday with all affiliates fully represented.

The affiliates, which included the Premier Soccer League, the four regions, the 10 provinces, women’s football, junior football, five-a-side football, referees, football medicine, coaches association, Footballers Union of Zimbabwe, NAPH, NASH and Tertiary institutions, also adopted the Asiagate report.

The assembly ratified the dismissal of chief executive officer Henrietta Rushwaya and marketing manager Harry Taruva.

Rushwaya was found guilty of mismanagement and insubordination by a tribunal headed by Labour Court lawyer Custom Kachambwa on six charges which, however, excluded the match-fixing and betting allegations which led to her suspension on July 27.

The assembly also heard that investigations of another Zifa employee, Jonathan Musavengana who was also implicated in the Asiagate scam, should be complete this week.

It was also agreed that board members implicated in the scam will be asked to step down if found guilty.

The assembly directed the board to bring in Zimra and the police anti-corruption unit to institute full criminal investigations into the Zifa employees who might have benefited from the match-fixing activities.-Herald sports reporter.
