Zambia suspends operations at mining firm after accident

LUSAKA. — Authorities in Zambia have suspended operations at a unit belonging to Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Plc after an accident which left seven miners injured with one of them in a critical condition, the Times of Zambia reported yesterday. Seven miners were injured at Konkola Deep Mining Project in Chililabombwe district on the Copperbelt Province last Friday when a cage which was ferrying them underground tripped, with one miner sustaining serious head injuries.
He has since been evacuated to South Africa for specialist treatment.
Deputy Minister of Mines, Energy and Water Development Richard Musukwa said the government had with immediate effect suspended normal hoisting activities pending detailed investigations.
Preliminary investigations in the accident revealed that there were high levels of negligence by the mining firm, he added.— Xinhua.
