Zahara says she was misquoted

time in Africa on her initial visit to Zimbabwe.

“It’s my first time to be in Africa,” Zahara said at a press conference last year.

The “Loliwe,” singer raised the ire of her local fans who deduced that she meant South Africa was not part of Africa.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon Zahara said she meant to say that she had never been in Africa outside South Africa.

“It was my first time to be outside South Africa. I am very happy that my music has taken me outside our borders. Zimbabwe feels like my second home and I feel great,” she said.

Zahara encouraged people to support local music.

“I am happy because my music is played here constantly, please do the same for the local artistes,” she said.

Zahara, real name Bulelwa Mkutukana, hails from the Eastern Cape and was born on November 9, 1987. She has proved to be the biggest female artiste, in terms of sales, South Africa in has seen since the demise of Brenda Fassie.

The singer has in the past staged memorable shows in Harare, Bulawayo and recently in Victoria Falls.

Zahara made history when her debut album “Loliwe” sold over 200 000 copies in South Africa alone. The only other female artiste to achieve such a feat in South Africa in recent years was Fassie.

Unlike Fassie, who was considered to be wild and outrageous with very outspoken views about life in the townships, Zahara enjoys popularity with more gentle soulful songs such as “Lengoma’’, “Umthwalo”, “Incwadi Encane”, “Thekwane” and the album title track “Loliwe.”
