The History Teachers Association (HTA) will next week hold a two-day conference for Ordinary and Advanced Level history teachers to address sticking points regarding the teaching and learning of the subject following the introduction of the new education curriculum.

The two-day workshop will take place at Midlands State University (MSU) from June 19 to 22 and is set to bring together stakeholders from the education sector and the history teaching fraternity to unpack the new teaching methodologies in line with the recently-introduced education curriculum.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Professor Paul Mavima is set to address the teachers, while stakeholders from the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec), Curriculum Development Technical Services (CDTS), college and university lecturers, as well as history fundis are expected to grace the occasion.

In an interview, HTA president Mr Manners Msongelwa said during the 2018 examination, most pupils did not do well due to some anomalies on examination papers, hence the workshop.

“The conference came about after we discovered that last year students did not do well in their November examination,” he said. “The conference is, therefore, expected to unpack the structure of the newly-designed question paper to the teachers so that they in turn pass the knowledge to the pupils. We found out that the 2018 results were not pleasing, hence we came up with this conference.”

Mr Msongelwa said Zimsec officials were expected to explain fully the new set up to the stakeholders.

“All history teachers across the country are expected to attend the conference as Zimsec and CDTS are expected to enlighten the teachers on the new set up of the examination structure,” he said. “We expect an improvement in the delivering of the lesson after the workshop.”

Mr Msongelwa said a discussion will also be held on how best to bridge the gap between the schools and tertiary institutions.

Last year, an updated version of the education curriculum was introduced and a lot is still being done to ensure that both teachers and learners grasp the demands of the latest version.
