THE sixth wife of a Harare man bit off her husband’s thumb after he brought a seventh bride into the home, the Harare Magistrates’ Civil Court heard yesterday.
The woman, Trish Nyika, is a “prophetess” with an apostolic sect that she and her husband, Bennias Makoro, started in South Africa.
She wanted a protection order issued against her husband and magistrate Ms Renika Dzikiti deferred the matter to February 28 for ruling.
Makoro told the court that his sixth wife had bitten off his thumb when she heard of the seventh wife.
“She is my sixth wife and we were not married for the six years we stayed together.
“I discovered that she is married in terms of Chapter 5:11 (of the Marriage Act).
“I married another wife when she (Nyika) was in South Africa. She only came back after she heard of my new wife.
“She came and caused havoc and bit me, removing my left thumb,” he said.
Nyika did not deny biting her husband, but said he too had sunk his teeth into her flesh.
“Some time last year I went to work in South Africa on a church mission, but when I came back home, my husband said he no longer loved me and I was not welcome.
“He has taken another wife, the seventh one, and since then he has been abusing me.
“On February 10 this year, he kicked me and bit my fore-finger and starved me and the child we adopted in South Africa,” she said.
She added: “I groomed him to become what he is now and he should take care of me.”
