Local non-governmental organisation, the Vana-Trust, which promotes empowerment through education and enriching the lives of children and young adults, has received a wheelchair-supported vehicle from ThisAbility Hub to be used by people with disabilities across the country.

ThisAbility Hub aims to bridge gaps between people with disabilities and their non-disabled counterparts in Zimbabwe.

More than two million people are estimated to be with disabilities and the National Disability Policy was launched in June by President Mnangagwa to help people living with disabilities.

ThisAbility Hub said it had expanded its hand by donating the wheelchair-supported vehicle to Vana-Trust which would be accessible to people with disabilities through the Vaya taxi platform.

Technical director of ThisAbility Mr Tapiwa Tsikai thanked President Mnangagwa for promulgating legislation that supports people with disability in line with the National Disability Policy.

“There is huge need for accessible transport in the country to people with disabilities,” he said. “Initially, this vehicle will only be able to cater for one wheelchair at a time.

“The vehicle will be accessible through Vaya taxis platform, but only to people with disabilities across the country.

“In terms of Governmental support, for every 10 buses, one of them has to be converted to become accessible to people with disabilities to make life easier for people with disabilities.”
