We’ll stand by Syria — Iran Bashar al-Assad

TEHRAN. — A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic will stand by Syria until a “complete victory” in the battle against foreign-backed Takfiri terror groups.

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks during a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus yesterday.

The official arrived in Syria on Wednesday at the head of an Iranian delegation on a two-day visit.

“We will continue our economic and political support as well as our (provision of) military advice (to Syria) until the complete victory over terrorism and its supporters,” Boroujerdi said.

The Syrian head of state, for his part, expressed gratitude for Tehran’s “constructive role” in his country’s fight against terrorism, saying the new anti-terror coalition comprising Iran, Russia, Syria and Iraq would be “our ace in the hole” during battles against terrorists in the region.

“Remarkable victories have come about under the auspices of the new coalition,” he noted, saying, “We will witness further success in the future.”

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since 2011, which has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people so far.

Addressing a news conference in Damascus, Boroujerdi also touched upon Iran’s anti-terror policy on Syria and Iraq and said the Islamic Republic has provided the two countries “with both military aid and advisory support.”

“It is natural that any other request (by the countries) has to be examined and decided on in the Islamic Republic,” added the senior Iranian parliamentarian.
