Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association Midlands commissar Cde Wilson Kufa “Biggie” Chitoro has died. He was 76. Cde Chitoro succumbed to diabetes at United Bulawayo Hospitals last week and was declared a liberation war hero. He was buried at the Midlands Provincial Heroes’ Acre yesterday where hundreds of people from all walks of life converged to bid farewell.

Speaking at the burial, ZNLWA national chairman Cde Jabulani Sibanda said, “We learnt of the death of Cde Chitoro with deep sadness. He was a gallant son whose support for the revolution was unwavering. He was not selfish like some fly-by-night politicians who sacrifice the interest of the revolution for personal gains.”

Midlands Minister of State Jason Machaya said Cde Chitoro was loyal to fighting poverty and hunger.
Cde Chitoro was famous in the province for his vigorous campaigning for Zanu-PF ahead of the 2008 and July 2013 harmonised elections.

He joined the liberation struggle in 1973 and was trained by Frelimo in Mozambique at Chipunga Base in Beira, before further training with Zanla in Chimoio in 1975. Cde Chitoro was appointed detachment commander at Shai Shai in 1977. He was then deployed to Gaza province’s sectors two and three.

In 1980, Cde Chitoro was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army and he retired in 1988 and became an instructor with the National Youth Service.

Cde Chitoro is survived by three wives, 65 children and 83 grandchildren.
