Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora has urged teachers to fully utilise the US$3 million Capacity Development Programme launched by President Mugabe in July to help upgrade their educational qualifications. Officially opening a new secondary school in Mt Darwin on Saturday, Dr Dokora said teachers, including those in the rural areas should take advantage of Government programmes to equip themselves with necessary educational tools.

He said if teachers undertook the programme, the country would maintain its high pass rates.
“The teacher capacity development programme launched by President Mugabe should be utilised by all teachers, including those in the marginal areas throughout the country,” said Dr Dokora.

The Capacity Development Programme for teachers was a brain child of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education with input from the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development.

Government supported the programme with US$600 000 in addition to the US$2,4 million donated by Unicef.
Dr Dokora said his Ministry would embark on a nationwide curriculum review to ensure that schoolchildren received education based on their culture and history.

He said the resolution of taking legal action against defaulting parents on school fees was among other efforts of maintaining the country’s high pass rates because children would not be barred from lessons.

“The burden of paying fees should not be accustomed to children,” said Dr Dokora.
“All parents should pay their fees before opening of every school term. I am tasking you chiefs of this area (Mt Darwin) to summon every parent who defaults in the payment of fees.”

Dr Dokora urged parents and school authorities to embark on fundraising projects to support their schools.
Speaking at the same event, Mashonaland Central Senator Damian Mumvuri said there should be unity for developmental projects to be fruitful.

He said the community should engage in small projects to sustain themselves instead of waiting for the Government to come up with handouts.
