The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) says it is targeting a 50 percent reduction in road accident-related deaths during this year’s festive season through its integrated road safety awareness campaigns countrywide.

Speaking on the sidelines of TSCZ-sponsored Amai Chisamba Show in Chinhoyi yesterday, TSCZ Information Communication and Technology (ICT) manager Mr Tatenda Chinoda said the organisation has embarked on an integrated road safety awareness marketing as it targets to reduce festive road accidents by 50 percent.

“As an organisation which is at the forefront of road safety awareness, we have embarked on an integrated road safety awareness campaign, where we are also calling stakeholders to play their part in educating people on issues of road safety as we target a 50 percent reduction this coming season,” he said.

“Some of the integrated approaches we are into include riding on social media platforms and Amai Chisamba Show, which have over one million viewers, churches, roadblock campaigns, which are going to start from December 11 to January 5,” he said.

Mr Chinoda said there is also a Short Message Service (SMS) campaign with Econet, where subscribers will receive road safety text awareness messages. He said it is the thrust of TSCZ to make sure they meet United Nations target of reducing road accident deaths by 50 percent by year 2020.

“All things being equal, we want a 50 percent reduction in road accident-related deaths as stipulated by the United Nations. It is also everyone’s responsibility to make sure there is road safety. People should exercise caution to avoid accidents,” said Mr Chinoda.
