Gokwe Town Council is seeking to raise $720 000 to deliver tap water to more than 4 700 households.

The local authority is also planning to service the town’s supply boreholes as part of President Mnangagwa’s 100 day vision for the local authority.

Gokwe Town Council heavily relies on borehole water as its supply dam, Gwehava, was decommissioned some years ago.

Gokwe town secretary Ms Mellania Mandeya said the water was being pumped from boreholes into a reservoir which in turn supplies the town.

“We were having serious water challenges with some of our boreholes have gone as deep as 200 metres. We still have some suburbs which are not connected to water so we are embarking on this project to connect water but we need at least $720 000 to complete the project,” she said.

She said the local authority got a $720 000 allocation under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) but only received part of the amount.

“We got an allocation of $720 000 under the PSIP for Njelele and Mafungautsi water reticulation programme, but we have only received part of the allocation,” said Ms Mandeya.

She said a contractor had already been identified.

“We have already completed the tendering process for the supply of water reticulation material.

“We have engaged the services of Proplastics and they have already started mobilising the requisite water pipes,” said Ms Mandeya.

She said laying of pipes will commence as soon as pipes were delivered.

Ms Mandeya the project will go a long way in ending water woes that were affecting many households in the small town.

Once complete, the project will leave at least 1 700 housing units in Njelele and 3 000 properties in Mafungautsi in extension with access to clean water.

Addressing thousands of zanu-pf supporters at a rally in Gokwe town recently, President Mnangagwa said Government is partnering local authorities to ensure that residents get clean water.
