Tout denies paternity

A tout told a Harare Civil Court magistrate recently that he was not aware that he had fathered a child until he received summons for maintenance. Andrew Chihunza told magistrate Mrs Barbra Mateko that his former girlfriend, Evelyn Bako, never told him she had fallen pregnant and had given birth to the child until last week when she filed for maintenance. Chihunza said he doubted if he was the biological father since he had not seen the child before. He, however, offered to pay $20 pending paternity tests.

Bako was demanding $80 a month for the upkeep of the minor child claiming Chihunza neglected her when she got pregnant.

“I did not know I had a child with her until I received the summons for maintenance last week,” Chihunza said.

“I was surprised when I received the summons because I only had sexual intercourse with her once and I never saw her since then till last week when she came with a policeman giving me the summons. I am a tout.

Bako told the court that Chihunza earned at least $150 every month and could afford $80 upkeep for his child.

Mrs Mateko ordered Chihunza to pay $30 pending paternity tests.
