BERLIN.- The deputy spokesman of the German political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) Alexander Gauland urged NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to build constructive relations with Russia.

The politician stated that NATO and Moscow have much more common goals than it may seem at first glance.

He also called the ‘zig-zag’ policy of the West towards Moscow dangerous and confusing and asked NATO to start a constructive dialogue.

According to Gauland, Brussels gradually started to realize that it is unwise to try to resolve the current international crises without Russia’s participation.

“It is impossible to interpret the desire to resume the dialogue in the format of NATO-Russia Council in another way,” the politician stated, cited by the online newspaper Die Freie Welt.

At the same time, Gauland expressed his concerns about Stoltenberg’s intention to accept Montenegro as a NATO member. He stressed that NATO should discuss this step with Russia to avoid another political crisis.

On Wednesday, NATO invited Montenegro to begin accession talks to become the 29th member of the alliance. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the move directly affected Russia’s interests and could lead to the destabilisation of the security situation in Europe.- Sputnik News.
