Sound transport systems key: Matiza Minister Matiza

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joel Biggie Matiza has said transport is critical in revitalising the economy and his ministry is working round-the-clock to ensure Zimbabwe becomes a transport hub by 2030.

The efforts point to the upgrading of the country to an upper middle income status in the next 11 years.

Minister Matiza made the remarks while addressing members of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Infrastructure during a workshop in Kadoma over the weekend.

The committee, chaired by Cde Oscar Gorerino, wanted to have an appreciation of operations in the parastatals that fall under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.

Minister Matiza said his ministry had crafted a strategic plan which is in line with the Transitional Stabilisation Programme to achieve their set goals.

“My ministry’s vision is to be a regional hub for world-class transport networks, logistics and services by the year 2030; a milestone set in line with the national Vision 2030,” said Minister Matiza.

“In addition to this, our mission is to develop integrated transport infrastructure networks and services that facilitate smooth, safe and secure movement of goods, services and persons.

“Key to these issues are the necessary tools to achieve these milestones.

“As such, my ministry crafted the strategic plan for the ministry in line with the Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP) 2018-2020, a critical Government detailed plan to direct the economy.”

Minister Matiza said the transport sector was facing several challenges, including the destruction of infrastructure by Cyclone Idai early this year.

He said the challenges were surmountable and Government was committed to addressing them in a holistic manner.

“My ministry is dedicated to addressing these challenges through the various departments and State Enterprises in the ministry,” said Minister Matiza.

“My ministry plays an important role in the provision of the transport and transportation services and infrastructure in Zimbabwe.

“Policies and legislation crafted are meant to define the operations and conduct of the transport sector; thus it is important to critically analyse the issues and needs of the economy.

“My ministry recognises the important role played by Parliament and the support provided to the ministry.”

Minister Matiza said apart from fostering a good working relationship between the Executive and the Legislature, the input by the legislators would contribute immensely towards the maintenance of good governance as established by the three tiers of Government.
