Small-scale female farmers were at the centre of the provincial Women’s Day commemorations for their commitment and efforts in ensuring food security at household and national level.

Thousands of women across the province converged at Ruyamuro Shopping Centre in Guruve to commemorate the Women’s Day belatedly.

Running under the theme, “Rural women cultivating food for all,” the day became an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of smallholder female farmers.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Christopher Magomo, who was the guest of honour said the Second Republic has put in place robust measures to create equal opportunities for both men and women.

He said the Government is committed to uplifting women, hence the introduction of women’s quota in Parliament and at local authority level.

“We are prioritising women during the allocation of land when the opportunity to distribute land arises,” said Minister Magomo.

“This is a deliberate move to help rural women in producing food for everyone.”

Minister Magomo challenged women to participate in politics and governance issues.

“This will ensure that they also hold important positions of authority,” he said.

“I urge you to exploit opportunities available at the Women’s Bank. Borrow money for projects and start income-generating projects that would help accomplish the National Development Strategy 1 and eventually, Vision 2030,” he said.

“Let’s join hands in the fight against drug and substance abuse that is threatening the lives of many young people.”

Minister Magomo toured an exhibition park where women displayed their products ranging from agricultural, pottery and weaving.

He planted this year’s national tree at the Ruyamuro police post.

Guruve Rural District Council non-ward Councillor Julliet Juckers urged women to work hard and challenge male-dominated areas.

“Stop looking forward to getting freebies from men. Work hard and venture into male-dominated spheres of the economy,” she said.

Cllr Juckers is a successful farmer and stone sculptor and owns a thriving lodge at Ruyamuro.

Ms Victorious Mazango of Victorious Empowerment Trust urged women to form groups of 10 and venture into the value addition of mawuyu and masawu fruits.
