UNITED States-based golfer Scott Vincent justified the buzz that continues to follow him when he scooped the best amateur prize at the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open at Royal Harare yesterday.
The former national amateur team captain had rounds of 73, 70, 72 and 67 for a total 282 beating last year’s winner Sean Crocker’s 288 by six strokes.

The Zimbabwean teenage ace managed to keep his composure in the high-profile event and believes he will do better next time.

“I think I did well and returning home the support was so encouraging and I believe I will do better next time,” Vincent said.

“I think the experience is good for me as I have managed to do well playing at the highest level. It was a good experience to take part in the local major event.

“I am now looking forward to my next events as this was a morale-booster for me and I am very happy for the support I am getting here back home.

“I managed to keep my composure during the four rounds.

“Returning home and meeting family and friends was something else and I enjoyed the support I got from the people here. I had a good following.”

Local players also managed to do well at this years’ event with Tongo Charamba coming out as the best tied on position tenth.

The Chapman professional had rounds of 67, 71, 69 and 72 for a nine-under-par 279.

The other two Zimbabweans who managed to make the cut were Ignatius Mketekete who had a difficult last round and Ryan Cairns.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe amateur golf team left for Cape Town South Africa yesterday to take part in the Zone VI tourney. The team will be captained by Christian Mbanga who believes they will make their presence felt.

“I think we have a very strong team and we are looking forward to doing well as we have some experienced players,” said Mbanga.
