George Chipadza Secondary School has donated sanitary pads to underprivileged girls in Zvishavane.

The school’s headmaster Mr Moses Zulu said their pupils decided to assist their peers in rural communities that have no access to pads. He said personal hygiene was imperative for girls that reached puberty and it was incumbent upon those with access to assist them.

“We have started donating sanitary pads to unprivileged girls in schools and within the community here in Zvishavane,” said Mr Zulu.

“The school committee appealed that the school must come up with a measure to help the girls who are failing to come to school during their menstruation cycle because they do not have sanitary pads.”

Mr Zulu said the schoolchildren had also decided on educating their peers, particularly those that were underprivileged on hygiene, especially when they were menstruating.

“We will engage on a programme where we will select women who will volunteer to educate the girls on their personal hygiene, especially during their menstruation period since some of them end up absconding school because they fear spoiling themselves since they have no access to sanitary pads,” he said.

Mr Zulu said they had approached different organisations and parents to help in the project.

“We have approached different organisation around Zvishavane and parents to donate pads so that they can be kept at school in case of emergency,” he said.
