SABHUKU VHARAZIPI IN A SCENE FROM THE COMEDY

David Mubaiwa, who acts as Sabhuku Vharazipi in the comedy series with the same name, has ventured into a new territory providing support acts to musicians during live shows. Though this is not the first time that comedians have had to share stage with musicians, Sabhuku Vharazipi’s case is different since he is purely an actor.

The feat has been easy for fellow comedian-cum-musician Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima.

Kapfupi tactically mixes both drama and music on his set.

Very often during live shows, the artiste delivers some bits and pieces of drama much to the delight of his fans.

Another renowned actor Lloyd Kurima, better known as Mabla 10, has provided snippets of action from his drama series Bag Rabvaruka on Jah Prayzah’s set.

He, however, sometimes doubles as a backing vocalist and dancer.

But, with Mubaiwa’s first hilarious drama Sabhuku Vharazipi, which explores social issues, having gone viral early this year, the temptation has been high for the actor to seek a grand stage to deliver his act live.

A number of the actors’ fans both in and outside the capital have expressed a desire  to see the actor live in action.

And this week on Saturday, “Sabhuku Vharazipi” will get a test of character and chance to prove himself in a not so familiar territory.

He will for the first time share the stage with not only ordinary musicians, but with the award- winning and high flying dendera crooner Suluman “Sulu” Chimbetu.

Fast rising dancehall artiste and arguably man of the moment Killer T real name Kelvin Kusi-kwenyu in a show dubbed “Shut Down Gig” in Zvishavane.

Though Sulu has played in the town this will be the first time that the dancehall artiste as well as the popular “Sabhuku Vharazipi” will be doing their enchantment in the Midlands mining town.

But, besides this gig being the two artistes debut appearance in this part of the country, many believe the actor/comedian will have an edge over the dancehall artiste since his work is broad-based.

Critics have argued that besides Killer T’s songs being anthems in imbibing places and promoters jostling for his signature, the musician’s fame is confined to the capital’s boundaries, as people from outside Harare hardly know his music.

However, that is set to change when the talented singer invades the Midlands.

But with his gunfire trademark, “po po po po po po” in songs like “Tirikumhanya”, “Makarova Gunners” and “Officer Mirai Chirukazi”, the Mbare-born and bred musician is likely going to prove why he is currently one of the most-sought-after musicians in the dancehall genre.

Considering the quality of artistes to perform on the day, the gig is expected to officially ignite the festive mood in the otherwise sleepy town.

One of the organisers of the show, Joseph “Joe” Munyebvu, said the gig was meant to bring a difference to the residents of Zvishavane and surrounding areas.

“The festive mood has already gripped the nation and this is our way to further spur it. We hope the show will leave lasting memories,” he said.

Munyebvu, however, quickly pointed out that the gig was not a competition of any sought but a gathering of musicians out to entertain fun starved residents.

“All the artistes that will perform are good in their respective genres and have a good following.

“Bringing them on one stage does not mean we want them to go into competition.

“We did so to bring value to the music and arts lovers through catering for various tastes, we made sure that there is something for everyone at the show,” he said.

Munyebvu also stressed that they have put tight security in place in case of hooliganism

“Although we are not anticipating any trouble at the show , we just have to take caution.”
