POLICE have warned people living in Avondale, Harare, to be wary of criminals who target their homes and businesses in search of money and other valuables. The Zimbabwe Republic Police posted the warning on its website this week, saying such cases were rampant in the area of late. The police gave tips to residents on how to secure their homes and businesses.

“Robbers typically launch their attacks from the back door, normally kitchen doors, because they are usually not fortified,” said the police.

“Get good doors for your kitchen. Use crossbars at the back or burglar-proof behind the doors inside the house. If you have keys to the burglar-proof, never leave them inside the lock. Where possible, use a padlock in addition to the keys. The purpose is to make it as difficult as possible for the robbers to enter into the house and to buy you time to call somebody for help.’’

Police challenged the residents to be cautious.

“When you hear someone breaking your doors, unless you are absolutely sure your actions will prevent entry into the house, do not try to be a hero by pushing back behind the doors (they may shoot at you through the doors), or putting heavy items like freezers or furniture behind it (they get more angry and when they are able to finally enter they are more likely to be violent),” the police said.

The police said those in possession of firearms were being encouraged to use them to defend themselves as it was legal to do so.

“If you have a gun, use it,” they said. “All firearms are registered and must be licensed. Usage in defence of property and life is legal and justifiable. Observe golden rules on use of firearms which encompasses the aspect of killing. Each situation should drive and dictate the degree of firing, either to kill or scare away intruders.

“Be your neighbour’s keeper and if you hear any break-in at their house, call the police for assistance.”
