Mashonaland East War Veterans’ Association chairperson Cde Daniel Sigauke has challenged war veterans to remain vigilant and patriotic in safeguarding the gains of the liberation struggle.

Cde Sigauke made the remarks on Wednesday during the burial of Cde Titus Thomas Makamanzi, who died agd 61,  at Mashonaland East Provincial Heroes’ Acre.

Cde Sigauke urged his colleagues not to be deceived into participating in activities which derail the gains of the liberation struggle, but to join hands with the Government to build a Zimbabwe which would be everyone’s pride.

“Fellow comrades, we are here today to pay our last respects to one of our own, a liberation cadre who sacrificed his happiness for a better Zimbabwe,” he said.

“Today we are reminded again how the independence of this nation was attained. My fellow comrades and all of you here, let us all remember that our freedom did not just come on a silver platter. There was bloodshed, people died, our brothers and sisters perished for it. In this vein all of us must guard this freedom closely and not be driven to destroy what we painfully gained.”

Cde Sigauke said freedom fighters have a mandate to steer the nation in the right direction and fulfil the dreams and vision of the surviving and departed freedom fighters.

“A lot is happening currently in our nation; social media is misleading people every day,” he said. “There are economic challenges, the prices of basics are shooting up, we must soldier on as freedom fighters to show others that the new dispensation is working flat out to turn around this                                                                                                                     economy.

“Our Government is busy with implementing various policies to turn around our economy, but there are some people who are busy destroying all that effort. They are busy sabotaging all the positives brought about by the new dispensation, and there are others who are happy to see people suffering.

“How can you be happy to see your colleagues suffering, how can you be happy when you sabotage your Government’s policies, that is total witchcraft.”
