Rape case: Top lawyer dumps client Bishop Magorimbo

Abundant Life Global Ministries leader Danmore Magorimbo yesterday remained mum during court proceedings in his trial for raping a church member after lawyer Mr Charles Chinyama dumped him. Mr Chinyama said he could no longer represent Magorimbo because he was not furnished with the reasons for the ruling on his application for discharge.

But the prosecutor, Mr Michael Reza, urged the court to continue with the defence case.

“One the day of the ruling, Mr Chinyama sent a representative from his law firm to note the reasons,” he said.

“There is no valid reason for this matter not to proceed to its defence.”

Magorimbo chose to adhere to the right to remain silent during cross examination by Mr Reza.

He refused to take an oath and did not respond to questions.

It is alleged that sometime in April last year at the church’s premises at 1 Hampden Road in Belvedere, Magorimbo approached a woman who was in a prayer room and invited her to his office claiming he wanted to conduct a cleansing ceremony to drive away evil spirits.

In the office, Magorimbo allegedly misrepresented to the woman that her husband transmitted evil spirits into her body each time they had sex.

It is alleged that Magorimbo raped the woman twice to “exorcise her”.
