The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management has killed a 12-year-old lioness at Gumira Village in Chipinge South after it killed livestock last week.

Village head Mr Caiphas Gapara said the community was living in fear as lions usually pounce at night.

“The lioness wreaked havoc at Magaba homestead and surrounding homes. It killed two goats at Magaba and seven goats and four donkeys at Machiya. Our lives are in danger here,’’ said Mr Gapara.

Mr Gapara said besides lion attacks, elephants were also destroying their crops.

“We are at a loss as we are terrified of the nocturnal animals which cross Save River from Save Conservancy and cause us untold suffering.

“If we leave the fields unattended, elephants will have a field day. With lions on the prowl, it is increasingly becoming difficult for people to stand guard at night,’’ he said.

A National Parks official, who refused to be identified, said all stakeholders must ensure that a fence is erected which would be beneficial for all.

“Obviously, as long as the fence is not there which keeps the animals in check within the conservancy, efforts to forestall the animal and human conflict will remain.

“Therefore, all attempts to solve this problem should be put on the table,’’ she said.
