Police in Chinhoyi have recovered an AK-47 with a fully loaded magazine that was stolen from the Lion’s Den early this month when a robber attacked a policeman guarding the premises.

In an interview on Monday, ZRP Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson Inspector Clemence Magbweazara said the firearm was recovered in a maize field next to the tollgate.
He said police are pursuing the criminal who attacked the police detail.

“Sometime in May, a robber attacked one of our details at the Lion’s Den tollgate and disappeared with his service AK-47 with a magazine which had 29 rounds of ammunition.

“A group of children playing in the nearby maize field discovered the firearm and its fully loaded magazine and alerted the police who attended the scene and recovered the gun and ammunition,” he said.

Insp Mabgweazara said the lone robber had attacked the policeman early in the morning before disappearing with his gun.
“We are investigating the matter so that the criminal will be brought to book,” he said.

The incident follows a few months after police arrested a group of robbers who attacked policemen in Chegutu before stealing their uniforms and guns.

The robbers who have since appeared in court had committed a series of robberies in Chegutu, Norton and Harare, but their luck ran out when they were arrested after a shoot-out in Chinhoyi.
The police also appealed to public for information which can assist in the arrest of the robber.
Nothing else was stolen from the tollgate during the robbery.
