LONDON. — Newcastle will this week interview their short list of managerial candidates which includes former England boss Steve McClaren and Manchester City’s head of the elite development squad, Patrick Vieira.

There is also a foreign coach involved – but it’s not their original target former Lyon coach Remi Garde who blew his chances earlier in the season by showing a greater interest in art galleries than events at St. James’ Park.

It could be third time lucky over McClaren who rejected overtures when Alan Pardew moved onto Crystal Palace and in the last few weeks of the season when interim boss John Carver came under severe pressure.

But the Newcastle hierarchy are prepared to go back to McClaren again who was sacked by Derby County who believed the Tyneside courting had wrecked the Rams’ Championship promotion ambitions.

Newcastle though have also booked in former Arsenal star Vieira for talks after being impressed by his work at Manchester City. — The Daily Express.
