Non-issuance of $1 parking tickets raises concern

Harare motorists have raised concern over the non-issuance of $1 parking tickets in the capital, in line with the new rate of $2 per hour.

The Herald has been inundated with calls from worried motorists who say parking marshals have never issued them $1 tickets when parking for 30 minutes, claiming that the City of Harare has not printed them.
Mr Timothy Munhari says he has been parking across the city without getting $1 tickets.

“I am concerned that somebody may be misusing funds meant to be channelled to the rightful authorities. I parked along Leopold Takawira just to meet someone there for a few minutes and I gave $1 to the City Parking guy.

“Interestingly, he did not give me a ticket, saying the system was down. A few minutes later, another man parked besides me and paid $4 and was issued with two tickets.
“So, is it not the same system that is used to issue $1 tickets?” asked Mr Munhari.

Another motorist Mr Michael Tavarunga has advised city fathers to interrogate how parking marshals are handling the $1 parking fees since no tickets are being issued.

“I suppose it has become important that City Parking bosses make some investigations on what is happening. If the city is serious about tightening any loopholes in revenue collection in particular and their operations in general, they must address this issue as a matter of urgency,” he said.

City Parking public relations manager Mr Francis Mandaza said he was unaware that marshals were not issuing $1 parking tickets.

“Parking now costs $2 per hour and if you still want to pay for 30 minutes, it is permitted and a ticket is produced. It is rare for one not to be given a ticket unless there is a technical challenge, but as of now, I am really not aware of anything like that,” said Mr Mandaza.
Mr Mandaza also advised motorists to pay enough money for parking to avoid being clamped.
