AFTER holding the second leg of the JM Busha track and field triangular series over the weekend in Bulawayo, National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe vice president Enias Nhoro says there has been some improvement on the quality of the competition.

The series end on May 25 with the finals at the National Sports Stadium in Harare featuring the top 16 athletes for each event.

The first leg was held in Harare last month and athletes continued with their efforts to earn points over the weekend that will see them securing their places in the top 16. Nhoro said although the turnout in Bulawayo was a bit low compared to the one in Harare, they were impressed with the competitiveness of the event.

“The event was good in terms of organisation and also the athletes did come to the competition.

“They came in their numbers although the number was less than that in Harare. Maybe it’s because some locals did not come, like schools. In Harare we had a lot of schools that took part in the competition. But the clubs came in their numbers.

“The quality was better than in Harare.

“The performance was much better. And as we get more competitions the performance from the athletes tend to get better. So as we reach the finals I think we should be getting very high performance,” said Nhoro. The national association was now working on combining the results from the two legs to decide the best 16 for each event that will meet in Harare in May.

“There is going to be comparison on points, we are now trying to see who is going to make it to the finals in Harare. They (secretariat) are finalising the details, adding the points so that they come up with the final 16,” said Nhoro.

Some of the athletes that were in Bulawayo include Tinotenda Matiyenga, Vimbai Maisvoreva, Kundisai Mudambo, Alice Agostino and Nigel Tom. They took part in the first leg last month.
