“The term is commonly used as a respectful way to address a man, usually of superior social status or military rank. Equivalent terms of address to females are ma’am or madam. So as an artist I just felt it was proper for me to expose what is in that culture” Lawyer-cum sculptor David Ngwerume yesterday unveiled a piece that explains how the “Sir” salutation came about and its use in different circumstances.In Zimbabwe Wicknell Chivhayo has successfully earned himself the title Sir Wicknell and the sculptor seeks to explain what the term means in his new piece.

Ngwerume said Sir was a honorific address used in a number of situations in many cultures.

The term can be used as a formal prefix, especially in the Commonwealth countries to males who have been given certain honours or titles.

“The term is commonly used as a respectful way to address a man, usually of superior social status or military rank. Equivalent terms of address to females are ma’am or madam. So as an artist I just felt it was proper for me to expose what is in that culture,” he said.

The piece that is made from spring stone has the man with a hat in his right hand and a jacket at the back. t adds to his gallery that has several stone works that depicts several societal issues as well as sports activities.

Ngwerume who is a lawyer by profession said they were working on several pieces that explore several cultures in Zimbabwe and several other countries.

“It is different from several other works that I have worked on because it has a different look. Look at how people with those titles looks,” he said.

His art works are made of spring stone and opal acquired from Chiweshe and Guruve.

He said his profession enhances his understanding of several issues and he makes sure weekend days are enough to work on his stone pieces.
