New school for the disadvantaged

City of Harare has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Reformation Centre to build a public primary school for disadvantaged children in Hatcliffe.According to minutes of the Education, Health, Housing and Community Services and Licensing Committee meeting held last week, council approved the partnership deal for the project.

The project is set to benefit children from the area and other marginalised groups.

“The committee had it before a report (October 28, 2014 circulated with the agenda) by the Corporate Services and Housing director on the proposal to construct a public primary school for the disadvantaged children on Stand number 9906 Hatcliffe Township Harare by Reformation Centre,” read the minutes.

“Council approves the allocation and development of Stand number 9906 Hatcliffe, which measures 3 553 acres, for the purposes of constructing a public primary school to cater for the disadvantaged by Reformation Centre as a social initiative for the Hatcliffe community.”

Another 3 553 acres will also be availed to the centre to allow for the construction of the school hall and city library.

“The organisation wished to build its own hall on the same site, which could not be possible due to the size of the stand and council would offer another site of the same hectarage for the purposes of setting up the hall incorporating a library for the City of Harare. The library upon completion would be handed over to council at no cost to it for its administration,” read the minutes.

Under the deal, the council will provide the designs for the school and manage its construction.

Upon completion of the school, the property will be handed over to council to handle its administration.

The initiative will go a long way in promoting the rights of disadvantaged children in accessing education and improving their quality of primary education.
