Sharing a name with your brother’s child brings a moment of pride for many, but a Harare man soon found out that the cultural and often noble practice can also be detrimental.Mr Steward Chapotera (68) last week said that the reputation he built in the last 68 years has gone to waste just in a flash after his nephew who is his namesake was taken to the Harare Civil Court by his wife that same week for serial bed wetting and abuse.

Cathrine Musendo also accused her husband of defecating on the doorstep each time he came home drunk.

Mr Steward Chapotera of Mabvuku visited The Herald saying the publication of his nephew’s story in the paper’s Tuesday edition caused discomfort among his peers and relatives who were constantly phoning him wondering how he could do such acts.

His nephew, Steward Chapotera, who was taken to court by his wife lives in Epworth.

“I have received numerous phone calls from my colleagues around the world after they read the story,” said Mr Chapotera.

“I am finding it difficult to convince them that I am not the one with such a behaviour. My nephew’s actions have betrayed me and destroyed my good name and reputation I have built over the years.

“I have a colleague in Malawi who phoned me wondering at the behaviour attributed to the name I share with my nephew.”

At the civil court Musendo accused her husband of exchanging family groceries for cigarettes and was seeking a protection order against him.

“I am sick and tired of cleaning his mess everyday because each time he comes home drunk he urinates on the blankets three times and then changes into fresh clothes,” she said.

“He goes to work but doesn’t buy food for the family, leaving the burden of feeding him and the children on me, yet I am not employed.”
