ZIMBABWE Karate Union technical director (full contact), Kumbirai Musinami, has challenged local fighters to give their best when they represent the country at the IKOKU South Africa International tournament this weekend in Cape Town.

The international event is scheduled for Saturday. The team had their final camp over the weekend at Raylton Sports Club in Harare.

“The guys are very well prepared. We had a three-day session from Friday to Sunday,’’ said Musinami.

“It was one of those intense training sessions that we normally have before we leave. According to what I saw in those preparations, our team is ready, they are raring to go. The spirits are high and they are actually very prepared. We should expect some medals,” Musinami said.

Other countries expected to grace the tournament are Japan, Russia, Iran, Ukraine and Brazil.

Musinami said although some of the high-ranked countries will be part of the event, they will not be intimidated, and expects results. “It’s going to be a tough competition for those who are not prepared, our team is prepared and we are not afraid.

‘‘We have got the likes of Tangayi “Mighty” Mhlanga (in the Open category), Justice Mutyoramwendo in the lightweight, he is in good form.

‘‘Sly Karidzamimba is there, he has been there before, and we expect a medal from him.

“We have sempai Kudakwashe Chiwandire, she was in camp, worked hard and she should be complimented by a medal.’’ Zimbabwe are set to field 21 karatekas who are scheduled to leave for South Africa today.

Chiwandire said she was up to the challenge. “I am really excited because it has always been my wish to represent the country,’’ said the 22-year-old.

“Despite the limited time in my preparations, I think I am well prepared enough to face anyone. I am hoping to come out tops.

“The tournament in Thokoza was my first regional tournament and I learnt a lot of things, including the way I am supposed to fight, and that’s what I have been working on. I think I will get another victory,” said Chiwandire.

Other top karatekas in the team include former world champion Samson Muripo, Likhwa Khumalo, Kelly Mtisi and Pumulani Maphosa.

They are also using the tournament to pick their final team for the So-kyokushin International tournament in Japan, in October.
