said her sister was only being held in prison because the police failed to arrest the targeted suspect.
Cynthia’s vehicle, a Mazda Demio, is suspected to have been used as a getaway car when Inspector Petros Mutedza was killed on May 29 last year. The man who was using it on the fateful day is still on the run. Darlington Madzonga, according to Mr Manjoro, was his sister’s friend and that he was the one using the vehicle on the day in question.
Mr Manjoro said the police openly told him that Cynthia would only be freed when Madzonga was arrested.
He also told the court that that he was also arrested together with some of the 29 on May 30 last year only to be released four days later without charge. Mr Manjoro said he was released so that he “would find Madzonga”.
“The police made it clear that our arrest (Mr Manjoro and Cynthia) was a mere formality and once Darlington has been arrested, we would be freed.
“They later released me to go and look for Darlington Madzonga and until he is arrested my sister will remain in prison,” he said.
He told the court that the vehicle belonged to Cynthia, but it was still registered in his name because he was the one who had imported it. The court heard that Cynthia was not even a driver and that she could not have driven the said vehicle on the day in question.
Mr Manjoro said the police also arrested Tungamirai Madzokere’s wife and sister and only released them after arresting the politician.
The wife and sister, according to Mr Manjoro, were released without charge together with him. Justice Chinembiri Bhunu is presiding over the case.
Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, Mr Gift Mutisi and Mr Jeremiah Bhamu are representing the 29 while Mr Edmore Nyazamba from the Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting.
The trial continues today with more witnesses testifying. The 29 are being accused of killing Insp Mutedza at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre on May 29 2011.
The attack occurred after an MDC meeting at Glen View 4 shops.
It is the State’s case that the group of party supporters went to gather at Munyarari Bar at Glen View 3 where they gathered and later attacked Insp Mutedza who had come to maintain peace at the centre.
